Welcome! I'm so excited that you're here for this programme on digital transformation. Have you ever thought about whether your company's going to be disrupted by a competitor using artificial intelligence technology? Or how a self-driving car is going to change your lifestyle? Or maybe whether your refrigerator is going to hold you hostage and threaten not to open until you buy more healthy food? Well, if you have, you're in the right place. Because I've been thinking about these things for many years. Including the part about the refrigerator.
My name is Chris Tucci. And I am Professor of Digital Strategy and Innovation at Imperial Business School. Which is a part of Imperial College London. Where I'm also the head of the Centre For Digital Transformation. A little bit about me. As you can tell from my accent, I'm from the United States. And I grew in Detroit, Detroit area. And afterwards, studied mathematical sciences, Music, and computer science at Stanford University before moving on into industry to do computer science research in digital technology. Specifically, connecting computers to the Internet.
And even the first wave of artificial intelligence. But after a while I got interested in how the company was spending money on research and development in digital innovation. So what we're taking computer science research and trying to commercialise it some ways. So I got interested in this whole digital space. And how that relates to innovation. And so I ended up going to MIT, Sloan School of Management to get a Ph.D. in management of technological innovations, specifically to study software technology. Disk drives and other digital technologies. And so I've been very into the topic ever since, teaching, researching, writing and speaking about it.
So what are we going to cover in this programme? Well, we've divided this programme into two main parts or phases. The first part is going to be about digital technologies. So the technologies driving digital transformation. And we're going to discuss a lot of interesting topics. Such as the cloud and mobile technologies. We'll go through the Internet of Things. What does that mean? Industry 4.0. Big data analytics. And how to interpret data. We'll discuss automation and artificial intelligence. The jobs of the future, and the jobs of the past. And we'll also discuss FinTech and blockchain. So we'll go through quite a nice discussion on the technologies themselves.
And then in phase two, the second half of this programme, we're going to discuss implementing a digital transformation. So what does that mean? We're going to discuss sources of value in a digital world. Where are the new sources of value? We'll talk about a framework for implementing digital transformation. So how will you go about actually doing a digital transformation initiative in your own organisation? And then, finally, we're going to end with a very interesting discussion on privacy, security and ethics. Â Obviously, new technology is transforming our organisations and our company strategy. I think it's useful. And as we'll see, it's a highly relevant job skill to have, is to be a manager who is also digital savvy. So I think there's a lot of potential here in this sector. I'm very excited about the topic. I'm glad you're here. And I look forward to working with you as part of this programme.
