Hi. I'm David Schonthal, and I'm a clinical professor of innovation and entrepreneurship here at the Kellogg School of Management. At Kellogg, I teach classes on innovation, design, creativity, venture capital, and entrepreneurship. Outside of Kellogg, I’ve spent my career helping companies innovate by using design, and design thinking. Most recently, I spent 10 years at IDEO where I was a senior director, helping companies in the health care space, transportation space, food and beverage, financial services, NGOs, and government organizations innovate by putting the needs of people first.

And that's really what design thinking is all about. It's about identifying the unmet needs of humans and using those insights with which to create creative change. Outside of innovation consulting, I also spent about 10 years in venture capital, investing in consumer businesses, healthcare businesses, and enterprise businesses alike, and I'm also the author of a book called 'The Human Element' which talks about what forces oppose change in innovation, and how we can effectively overcome them. I'm excited for you to be a part of this class. Design thinking is one of the most durable competitive advantages any organization or individual can possess. At the end of every business, the end of every product, the end of every service, is a human. And the more deeply we understand those humans’ needs, the more innovative ways we can help them make the progress they seek in their lives. This course is going to be very hands-on. You're going to roll up your sleeves, and actually practice the craft of design, and everything we do in each module can be immediately applied to what you do in your day job. I know you'll find it exciting. It's a lot of fun to be a part of, and I look forward to meeting you both in the online environment, as well as when we have live sessions together, and get to interact one on one. I look forward to seeing you, and I hope you enjoy the course. Thanks.
