Now I know many of you probably have great ideas and many, many skills, but no matter how sophisticated you are in your ideas, you need negotiation and influence in order to persuade other people to help you in implementing those ideas. So in order to be a principled, innovative leader who improves the world, you need negotiation and influence skills.
This course is taking place at MIT Sloan School of Management, which is part of MIT, and in fact, this course may confirm some of the stereotypes you could hold about MIT. At MIT we have a heavy use of technology and this course uses technology quite a bit. At MIT we have a lot of innovation that goes on, and in this course we have some innovative teaching practices. For example, you will receive real time feedback on your negotiations as the course goes on. And at MIT we like to quantify things. So in this negotiation course, we're going to quantify many different aspects of your negotiation. We'll quantify your economic outcomes, but we'll even quantify your relationships.
I know many of you come into this course with different levels of experience. Some of you probably do negotiation all the time, and for you, this course will put some structure around what you do already, helping you formalize and reinforce what you already may do well. Some of you may be less experienced in negotiation, or maybe you even have anxiety about the process of negotiation. Maybe you feel like you're not good at it. For you, this class will give you concrete strategies and frameworks that demystify the process and make you feel more comfortable negotiating.
I hope you enjoy the course as much as I enjoy teaching it. To get started, I'd like you to. If you haven't already done so, please introduce yourself and say a little about what negotiation challenges you face in your life. It could be challenges from your work, or it could be challenges from your personal life. And say a little bit about what you hope this course will teach you in order to help you overcome those challenges.
