If you are working in healthcare as a practitioner or a manager, you know how rewarding a career in healthcare can be. The work you do is essential to the clients you serve, and to the well-being of this country, both socially and economically. You have chosen a career that will give you deep satisfaction and will challenge you daily. In your development as a healthcare manager, you will need leadership and business skills to manage the daily operations of your unit. You'll also need a broad understanding of the complexity of the US healthcare system, its current trends, and the challenges it faces.

The healthcare system in the US is under pressure from the government, payers, and citizens to improve the quality of care, while reducing the cost and improving access. This is no small task. The healthcare industry is massive and complex. Currently about 20 percent of the GDP in the US is spent on healthcare, one in every $5. And one in every eight people in the US is currently employed in healthcare. Improving the value offered by such a large and complicated industry will require knowledge and awareness, hard work, and the courage to explore new ideas.

As a manager or future manager, you will have opportunities to address the issues that impact value in your healthcare unit. In this program, you'll learn how to increase value by focusing on key aspects of quality, access, and cost. We will study the best managerial and business practices and tools that are at the core of every successful business and industry. Over 24 weeks, we will discuss core topics, such as leadership, accounting, finance, quality improvement, innovation, marketing, and strategy as they apply to the field of healthcare.

We will also focus on healthcare specific topics, such as patient-centered care, population health, clinical integration, patient safety, and effective communication for healthcare professionals. Given that healthcare is the most regulated industry in the US, we will also discuss healthcare law, ethics, and litigation. By the end of this program, you'll have a healthcare manager's understanding of all aspects of the business of healthcare. I feel confident that this will support your success in your chosen field and will help you to contribute to the mission of improving quality and reducing costs in what I believe is the most important industry in the US. Thank you for joining the cohort. Let's get started.
