Build Character Before Personality

Insights From '7 Habits Of Highly Effective People' by Stephen R. Covey

Since its publication in 1989, Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People has sold over 25 million copies.

It is, arguably, the most well-read self-help book on business and personal success.

The question is what makes this book so effective compared to other self-help books.

To start with, it is based on the research Covey did for his doctorate degree, in which he explored the human side of success.

For that, he studied success literature spanning the previous two hundred years, and here’s what he found: The focus in the first one hundred fifty years was on the character ethic as the foundation for success, while those of the past fifty years concentrated on what he calls the personality ethic.

For instance, take a beautiful building.

What do you notice?

The arches, the facade, the color of its walls.

But this building must rest on a strong foundation.

No one sees that, but that is what your character is.

Without good character, skills developed through the personality ethic are phony and you will be caught sooner or later.

With values as his foundation for writing this book, Covey presented his teachings in a series of seven habits via a process he calls the Maturity Continuum.
