What the Leadership Program in AI Includes
The Leadership Program in AI from Wharton Executive Education is built for nontechnical senior executives with at least 10 years of work experience, and no technical or coding background is required. Wharton faculty teach AI, machine learning and analytics through a strategic business lens, so you learn to judge AI initiatives on business relevance, organizational impact and long-term value. Prasanna Tambe, PhD, Professor of Operations, Information and Decisions at The Wharton School and Faculty Co-Director of AI at Wharton, is the program’s Academic Director.
The curriculum runs in five parts:
| Phase | Length and format | What you work on |
| Data-Driven Decisions | 3 weeks, online and live online | The AI landscape, market insights from observational data, and A/B testing |
| Machine Learning and Applications | 5 weeks, online and live online | Core AI and ML concepts for leaders, strategy through ML, and how generative AI and large language models work |
| AI Inputs and Outputs: Business, Legal, and Ethical Responsibilities | 5 weeks, online and live online | Bias, interpreting AI output, legal and regulatory barriers, and the impact of AI on the workforce |
| Data and Algorithms in the Organization | 2 weeks, online and live online | Building data analytics capabilities and an analytic mindset |
| Leading and Managing High-Impact Teams | 6 weeks, online | A required short course on engaging global teams, winning stakeholder support and shaping a leadership strategy |
Alongside the modules, you join required faculty-led live sessions, including one on navigating legal and regulatory barriers to AI, and a series of live webinars on generative AI developments with Wharton faculty and industry leaders. Webinar topics cover LLM foundations, balancing cost and quality in AI, enterprise challenges with LLMs, and LLM agents and the future of work. Case studies on Rocket Fuel, RugsPlanet, Air Canada and WW International ground the material in real decisions about experimentation, data interpretation, reliability and ethical oversight.
After the program, you can meet your cohort and faculty in person at an optional two-day recognition ceremony and networking event on the University of Pennsylvania campus in Philadelphia. A separate registration fee applies.
What the Capstone Gives You to Take Back to Work
The capstone in the Leadership Program in AI turns the course into a working plan for your organization. Across six structured checkpoints, you identify a high-value decision point in your organization, run a cost-benefit analysis of applying AI to it, and set out the data and technology infrastructure your solution needs. You also assess the limits of AI-enabled decisions, work through regulatory and data privacy requirements, and outline the job changes and employee training needed to bring AI into your workforce. You finish with a clear, actionable roadmap for AI adoption.
Wagner Fernando Turri, Sales Director, OEM Asia at Hypertherm, described the result this way: “After completion and by having a capstone project, I felt more capable of having some deep discussions within my organization and among industry peers on the opportunities for AI to leverage sales efficiencies.”
How to Judge the Value of an AI Leadership Program
Value in an executive AI program comes from what the fee buys and how well the format fits your schedule, and the Wharton Leadership Program in AI is designed to answer both. When you compare programs, weigh these factors together:
Time you can sustain. The program asks four to six hours a week over six months, structured to fit alongside your professional commitments.
Faculty contact. Required faculty-led live sessions and live generative AI webinars give you direct access to Wharton faculty and industry leaders.
Applied work. The capstone produces an AI roadmap built on a decision point in your own organization.
Peers. You learn with a global cohort of senior leaders from diverse industries, and past participants have come from organizations such as Microsoft, Google, Wells Fargo and EY.
Credential and next steps. You earn a Wharton Executive Education digital certificate, and the program counts toward Wharton’s General Management Program and alumni status.
Payment options. You can pay the full program fee upfront or in easy installments. Applying well in advance of the start date earns a tuition fee benefit, and a referral discount is available.
Asking Your Employer to Sponsor It
Wharton Executive Education provides a customizable template for the Leadership Program in AI that you can adapt into a request to your manager. It sets out the program’s flexibility, its learning outcomes, the optional on-campus networking event, and your commitment to share key takeaways with colleagues. Before you send it, add the current start date and program fee.
Sponsorship requests tend to turn on three questions: what capability the organization gains, how much of your working time the program takes, and what you will have to show at the end. The capstone answers the first and third directly, because your roadmap addresses a real decision point in your own organization. The four to six weekly hours answer the second.
If your development budget resets at year’s end, raise the request before it does. An early application also earns the tuition fee benefit.
Is a Wharton Executive AI Certificate Respected the Way an MBA Is?
The Wharton Executive Education digital certificate and an MBA carry different signals. An MBA is a broad general management degree. The certificate you earn from the Wharton Leadership Program in AI is a focused, current credential: it shows that you completed six months of Wharton faculty-led study in AI leadership, governance and strategy, and built an AI roadmap for your organization. In a field that moves as fast as AI, that currency gives a board, a search process or a new employer specific evidence of your AI leadership knowledge.
The program can also be the first step toward Wharton alumni status. It provides one credit toward the six required to complete Wharton’s General Management Program (GMP). After completing the Leadership Program in AI and subsequent open-enrollment programs, subject to further qualification criteria and additional tuition, you have a pathway to apply for Wharton alumni status. Qualifying alumni can join 77+ Wharton alumni clubs, receive invitations to Wharton global alumni forums and get a Wharton email address.
