- Common Questions About Choosing an AI Program as a Senior Leader
The MIT xPRO AI Strategy and Leadership Program: Driving Data and Organizational Transformation is the job of a senior leader who manages analysts and does not write code. Over 12 weeks of online live sessions, at about five hours per week, you learn to set an AI strategy, evaluate your organization’s data strategy, and govern AI risk. The program builds AI strategy and governance capabilities without requiring technical or coding expertise, and it is designed for C-suite executives, chief data officers, senior directors and managers, transformation consultants, and founders.
Four Factors That Decide Which AI Program Fits You
When you compare AI programs for business leadership, four factors separate one from another: how the teaching is delivered, what assessed work you complete, whether you are expected to write code, and who learns alongside you. In the MIT xPRO AI Strategy and Leadership Program, each of these is designed around leaders who guide AI decisions rather than build technical solutions.
How is the teaching delivered? A library of recorded video and a program with live faculty-led sessions ask different things of you. Self-paced study gives you full control of your schedule; live sessions give you scheduled contact with faculty, speakers, and peers. MIT xPRO AI Strategy and Leadership program combines both: faculty video lectures you watch on your own schedule, live online sessions, and office hours with program leaders. If you miss a live session, a recording is made available.
What assessed work will you complete? Look for assessed work that asks you to apply the material to organizational decisions. Our program concludes with capstone assignments that require you to apply AI strategy, data systems, governance frameworks, and leadership concepts to realistic organizational scenarios, ending with creating your strategic plan. Along the way, playbook activities cover topics such as data management in your organization and responsible AI in your organization.
Are you expected to write code? Programs aimed at practitioners list languages, libraries, and models. Programs aimed at leaders cover sequencing, risk, governance, and organizational design. Read the module list rather than the title. MIT xPRO AI Strategy and Leadership program’s 12 modules are organized around strategy, data, risk, and leadership, with no programming modules.
Who learns alongside you? Check who a program is designed for, because those are the people in your discussions. The program is designed for C-suite executives and senior leaders, mid-level to senior directors and managers, strategy and transformation consultants, and founders. You communicate with other participants through the learning platform, where you can form groups based on your interests and location.
“The best part of the MIT xPRO AI Strategy and Leadership Program was the integration of real-world AI strategy applications with leadership development. It provided a hands-on opportunity to not only understand machine learning tools but also learn how to lead teams through technological change. The capstone assignments allowed me to directly apply what I learned to practical challenges, making the learning experience both engaging and impactful.”

What You Learn in the MIT xPRO AI Strategy and Leadership Program
The MIT xPRO AI Strategy and Leadership Program teaches in two phases. Phase 1 examines how data and AI shape business strategy; Phase 2 explores how leaders drive responsible AI adoption and innovation across an organization. For a leader of analysts, Phase 1 gives you the vocabulary and frameworks to evaluate your team’s work, and Phase 2 covers how to organize and lead the people doing it.
Phase 1: Building AI and Data Foundations. AI Strategy, Leveraging Data for AI, Data Strategy, Deployment and Insights, Understanding AI Risks, and Data Privacy. You evaluate an organization’s data strategy, apply predictive analytics insights to decisions, and assess the cost implications of deploying an AI and data strategy.
Phase 2: Leading AI Transformation. AI and Leadership, Architecting a Nimble Organization, Architecting the Gameboard at the Team Level, Developing Your Leadership Signature, AI Governance, and Culture of Innovation. You design an AI governance policy, evaluate centralized and distributed governance models, and develop strategies for building and leading x-teams.
The faculty includes Alex “Sandy” Pentland, Toshiba Professor of Media Arts and Sciences at MIT, and Deborah L. Ancona, Seley Distinguished Professor of Management and founder of the MIT Leadership Center at MIT Sloan School of Management. Live online session topics include moving from AI pilots to enterprise value through workflow redesign, safety and security in a world of AI agents, and AI regulation by design.
Matching the Program to Your Situation
The right AI program depends on what you need to do in your role. In the MIT xPRO AI Strategy and Leadership Program, you can match each of these needs to a specific part of what we teach.
If you manage analysts and need to guide their work, focus on the modules on data strategy, deployment insights, and AI risks. They show you how to assess AI initiatives and set direction for your team.
If time is your main constraint, plan about five hours per week for 12 weeks. Video lectures and assignments are available weekly throughout the program, and live sessions are recorded for those who cannot attend.
If you need a credential, on successful completion, the program grants a certificate of completion and 6.0 Continuing Education Units (CEUs). The program is graded pass or fail, and participants must receive 70 percent to pass.
If you lead a transformation across teams, Phase 2 covers organizational design, x-teams, and AI governance, and the capstone assignments include designing a more adaptable organization.
Getting in Without a Technical Degree
Yes, a senior executive without a technical degree fits the MIT xPRO AI Strategy and Leadership Program. The program builds AI strategy and governance capabilities without requiring technical or coding expertise, and its intended participants are C-suite executives and senior leaders, directors and managers, consultants, and founders.
Phase 1 starts with the foundations: the first module explains how AI and data technologies have reshaped business models, differentiates key types of AI, and addresses common misconceptions about AI in strategic decision making. You build the technical vocabulary inside the program rather than bringing it with you.
Program Fee and Payment Options
Choose one format, curriculum, assessed work, and peers first, then look at how to pay. For the MIT xPRO AI Strategy and Leadership Program, we offer flexible payment options, including installment payments and loan financing through partner loan providers. Group enrollment benefits are available if you want to enroll your team, and tuition assistance may be available for participants who qualify; your program advisor can discuss it with you.
