Q: What inspired you to join the Wharton CSO Program?
Robert King: As I interacted with clients and engaged in mission-critical strategic discussions, I realized I needed a deeper understanding of their pain points and concerns. I also wanted to expand my strategic vocabulary and improve my ability to confidently discuss frameworks during those conversations. This strategic leadership program from Wharton was a way to dive deeply into strategic frameworks, leadership presence, and additional skills that would help me during those conversations.

Q: How do you believe the Wharton CSO Program helped you achieve some of those professional goals?
Robert King: During the initial core section of this strategic leadership program, we discussed willingness to pay and various strategic models for setting up and implementing domestic and international strategies. I came away with frameworks and tools that allow me to explore how an organization can examine its challenges, turn those challenges into variables, and use mental models to turn a vision into reality.

Q: Aside from the frameworks, what specific learnings of the Wharton CSO Program have been most beneficial?
Robert King: The most beneficial learning from the Wharton CSO Program’s strategic leadership training was taking a high-level strategy and breaking it into something tactical and tangible. The program taught us how to translate mission and vision so that the average person in an organization—or even a customer—can understand what you are trying to achieve. It focused on two key parts: developing a core strategy and leading once that strategy is in place, including the change-management tactics that support it.

Q: In the Wharton CSO Program, how did interacting and networking with a global set of peers enhance your experience?
Robert King: It was fascinating. Our local bias often makes us expect discussions only from our own point of view. But with an international cohort, you read something and realize, “That is a different perspective.” Sometimes it came from their geopolitical or life experience. During the course of the Wharton CSO Program, I learned to pause and consider these perspectives because they had a lot of rational validity. When I did, it created a “yes, and” opportunity to combine both my idea and theirs.

Q: Could you tell us more about how the diverse cohort of this strategic leadership program amplified your learning?
Robert King: In the Wharton CSO Program, my cohort amplified my learning because I was exposed to so many different viewpoints. We came from various levels, organizations, and industries, so we naturally saw things differently. Being in a group where you could express your opinion and have it challenged amplified my learning because I would see something different when my perspective was challenged.

Q: What would you say to someone on the fence about doing this strategic leadership program by Wharton?
Robert King: You should consider the Wharton CSO Program, but ensure you have the time to invest. The personal engagement you put in is what you get back. While we all have challenging professional and family obligations, ten months go by extremely fast. The great thing is that you will start using the material immediately at work. For example, I started applying the concept of willingness to pay right away, and it helped me bring a client closer to understanding their dynamic business environment.
